I am writing to you in your role as a member of the Board of Governors to ask you to immediately settle the labour dispute with the DFA. The Board of Governors has the power, and the responsibility, to end this lockout and settle the contract.
Just to be clear, the Dalhousie Faculty Association has continually asked to bargain, and has shown a willingness to move on their bargaining position, to the point that the differences between the Board’s and DFA’s position are relatively minimal. It’s time for the Board to be willing to move and to approve the DFA’s latest offer.
In summary:
The Board initiated an unprecedented, pre-emptive lockout, the first in the U15 group of research universities
The Board’s lockout disrupted the beginning of term, a vital time for students, and especially for first-year students (who are now actively being recruited by other universities)
The Board’s refusal to bargain in good faith prolonged the labour disruption (and led to three Bargaining complaints filed with the province)
The continual delays threaten research-grant funding and Dal’s standing as a research institution
The Board’s failure to work with the DFA shows a disregard for the province’s health care crisis and threatens Dalhousie’s ability to train the next generation of nurses
The Board’s continued refusal to compromise—despite “saving” $10 million and counting on DFA salaries—is now threatening the term and Dalhousie’s national and international reputation
The Board started this. It’s time for the Board to end this. Sign the deal.
