On Rallies, Solidarity, and a University in Crisis, or, This Month has been a Helluva Year…
This week will mark the start of our fourth week of being locked out by our administration and board. We are approaching a full month of lost work, lost prep-time, and lost teaching. Some of the lasting effects of this lost time and work are detailed in the videos and images posted below, developed by our virtual picketing team (started by our colleague Asha Jeffers–during her sabbatical–and continued expertly by colleagues Martha Radice and Stephanie Kapusta–thanks team!). Many of these are already circulating, but please share widely.
These messages focus on research but, as they all point out, this is not just about what individual faculty members are losing: it’s about the effects such losses have on our wider research and educational communities, and especially on our students.
The administration’s and board’s lockout, in other words, has taken funding and world-class research and learning opportunities from us, our communities, and from both undergraduate and graduate students. (Do individual board members or the group as a whole not understand this? Has the whole board met to discuss these issues?)
But it has also been a time of productive gain, especially in the support we have seen from, and the solidarity built with, our sibling unions at Dalhousie and more widely in the city, province, and country as we saw in our “One Line, One Membership! Solidarity March and Rally” last Friday.
And both the losses and gains are being noticed! Check out the recent media reports linked below, also gathered up by our virtual team!
It is clear that pressure is building on all the members of our Board to stop their delaying tactics and end the damage they are doing to our institution: come together to sign a full and fair deal!
